Dutch conceptual artist Bas Jan Ader is a mythic figure in the canon of conceptual art history: his disappearance at sea while sailing from the east coast of America to Europe, occured during the final part of a three-part project, In Search of the Miraculous (1975).
His work exhibits Sisyphean elements, particularly his series of films and photographs documenting his falls, and his death perhaps illustrates this the most; failing as he did, to complete the journey.
Lifetime solo shows include Art & Project, Amsterdam, 1972 and Claire Copley Gallery, 1975. Retrospectives include Sweeney Art Gallery, CA, 1999, and Bas Jan Ader: Please Don't Leave Me, Camden Arts Centre, London, 2006, and Kunsthalle Basel, 2007. He also featured in In and Out of Amsterdam: Travels in Conceptual Art 1960-1976, MoMA, NY, 2009.
His work is held in the collections of Groninger Museum, Groningen, Art & Project archive, and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, amongst others.
