The Body as Language: Women and Performance celebrates the 40th anniversary of Lea Vergine's homonymous book on Body Art. It was published in concurrence with two exhibitions curated by Paola Ugolini: The Body as Language (Richard Saltoun Gallery, London) and Body Art & Performance (Miart, Milan).

These exhibitions examined the birth and development of performance art in relation to gender. Focusing on women artists working in Italy during the 70s, the publication features Gina PANE, Ketty La ROCCA, Renate BERTLMANN and Suzanne SANTORO. A section on dance performance in Rome included photographs of Trisha BROWN, Simone FORTI and Yvonne RAINER, through the lens of Claudio ABATE
