Richard Saltoun is pleased to present a selection of works by LI Yuan-Chia and Renate BERTLMANN on the occasion of Taipei Connections.
The first woman to solely represent Austria at the Venice Biennale in 2019, Renate BERTLMANN (b. 1943) has since the 1970s focused on issues of eroticism and sexuality through a feminist practice which spans painting, drawing, collage, photography, sculpture and performance. This selection includes some of her most recent works, including Venice Rose (2019), a sculpture made of 3 handblown Murano glass roses with metal blades, modelled on her powerful installation at the Venice Biennale.
Often considered China’s first conceptual artist, the adopted Taiwanese artist LI Yuan-Chia (1929-1994) is best known for works he produced during his time in Taipei (1949-1962) and then in Bologna (1962-1966) where he developed a unique style of combining traditional Chinese calligraphy with modernist abstraction. This selection includes works on paper and paintings from both periods.
