John HILLIARD (b. 1945)

British conceptual photographer John Hilliard's approach to photography is rigorous and systematic. The emphasis on the intellect, on thinking, in his photographs over-rules the aesthetic appeal of the physical objects and subjects presented.

A student at Lancaster College of Art (1962-64) and St. Martin's School of Art, London (1964-67), he quickly made a name for himself with his first solo show at the Camden Arts Centre, London in 1969. Hilliard, as well as being an artist, is a professor at the Slade College in London.
