Taipei Dangdai: Booth: D01

10 - 12 May 2024

At Taipei Dangdai 2024, Richard Saltoun presents a duo exhibition featuring the works of Li YUAN-CHIA (1929 - 1994) and Greta SCHÖDL (b. 1929 -). Inspired by the current exhibition "Making New Worlds: Li Yuan-Chia and Friends" at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, this presentation delves into Yuan-Chia’s multifaceted practice as both an artist and organizer, showcasing his profound influence on cosmopolitan artistic networks and particularly on his fellow contemporary, Greta Schödl, who is still active today, and is included in the Biennale Arte 2024, curated by Adriano Pedrosa.

Yuan-Chia was one of Taiwan’s earliest pioneers of abstract and conceptual art, working across various mediums like ink, oil, conceptual art, sculpture, photography, and participatory installations. Born in Guangxi, China to humble beginnings, Yuan-Chia eventually settled in Taiwan where he started to gain recognition as part of the revolutionary Ton-Fan group, becoming one of the '8 Great Outlaws'—the pioneering abstract artists of Taiwan. He later established the LYC Museum and Art Gallery in Cumbria, a pivotal space where he organized exhibitions for fellow artists, including Schödl. Yuan-Chia participated twice in the São Paulo Biennale (1957/1961), and had significant solo shows at prestigious institutions like The Whitworth, Manchester (2019), Tate Modern, London (2014), and Taipei Fine Arts Museum (2014).

Schödl was born in Hollabrunn, Austria, and relocated to Bologna in the late 1950s, a time when female artists were scarce in Italy. She stopped making art for seven years to raise a family, before devoting herself once again to developing a pioneering practice. Her works range from postcard-size to over 3 meters long, merging geometric forms, vibrant colors and gold leaf interlaced with repeated words to the point of abstraction. Her works also often incorporate household materials, challenging societal norms linked to domesticity.
