Marinella PIRELLI
Marinella PIRELLI, Tramonto [Sunset], 2001A crucial figure in the Italian post-war period, Marinella Pirelli left behind a unique body of work across painting, drawing, moving image, light environments and experimental cinema. With a career spanning more than fifty years, Pirelli’s artistic efforts and unquestionable talent are still surprisingly under-recognised.
An abstract image of a setting sun, Pirelli uses gold leaf, nitrolac and acetate on card, to create this compelling image. Dated 2001, this is from one of her last series: she had abandoned her artistic practice in 1974, following the tragic death of her husband, but returned to painting in the late 80s, focusing on intimate portraits and abstract works.
A unique work, it is a great example of Pirelli's highly personal and experimental practice, encompassing painting, drawing, moving image, light environments and experimental cinema.
Her varied approach meant it was difficult situate her practice within a movement or ‘ism and this is perhaps one of the reasons why Pirelli’s work was neglected by a traditional and esoteric version of art history. -
100% Women
1 March 2019 - 1 March 2020From March 2019 to March 2020, Richard Saltoun Gallery dedicated 100% of its exhibition and art fair programme to women artists. Titled 100% Women, the initiative was implemented to address the gender inequality that persists in the art world and encourage wider industry action through debate, dialogue and collaboration. It is now a leader in its representation of female artists, from avant-garde pioneers of the 1960s and '70s to a younger generation of female artists working today. It continues to support female artists through extensive research, partnerships and solo presentations at the gallery and online.
