Caroline ACHAINTRE
31 1/2 x 20 7/8 x 10 1/4 in
Her practice is influenced by radically diverse cultural references—primitivism, European carnival traditions, German Expressionism, and science fiction. Working across textiles, ceramics, watercolor, tapestry, ink, and basketry, she creates hybrid creatures that inhabit a space between the familiar and the uncanny. Her installations often transform exhibition spaces into theatrical stages where dialogues between ghostly, grotesque, and fantastic characters can unfold.
Recent and past exhibitions include 'Gobbler' at Art Basel Unlimited (2025); 'Material Worlds: Contemporary Artists & Textiles' at Djanogly Gallery, Lakeside Arts, Nottingham, touring from the Mead Gallery, Warwick Arts Centre (2025); 'The Cast' at Haus Coburg, Delmenhorst, Germany (2024–2025); 'Roadrunner' at Neues Museum, Nuremberg (2023); 'Doppelganger' at Museum Lothar Fischer, Neumarkt (2023); 'Inhabitants: Encounter' in Lisbon (2022–2023); 'Shiftings' at Kunstmuseum Ravensburg and Centre d’art Pasquart (2021– 2022); 'Permanente' at CAPC, Bordeaux (2020–2021); 'Vue Liquide' at Fondation Thalie, Brussels (2020); 'Permanent Wave' at Belvedere, Vienna (2019); 'Fantômas' at De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea (2018); 'Caroline Achaintre' at BALTIC, Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (2016); a solo presentation at Tate Britain, London (2015); and 'Present/Future' at Castello di Rivoli, Turin (2013).
