Bringing together Stella Snead (1910–2006), Peter Kennard (b. 1949) and Brigitte Niedermair (b. 1971), the presentation considers how photography is staged, manipulated and reimagined to offer alternative perspectives on reality.
Snead's photo-collages combine familiar subjects and landscapes in uncanny and unexpected ways, creating Surrealist compositions that challenge conventional ways of seeing. Her work was included in Surrealism USA at the National Academy Museum, New York (2005), and Phantoms of Surrealism at Whitechapel Gallery, London (2021).
Kennard's photomontages, recently presented in his major exhibition Archive of Dissent at Whitechapel Gallery, London (2024), expose the relationship between war, power and propaganda, using everyday imagery to question how political events are represented.
Niedermair's Eccehomo (2018), created for Castel Tirolo, depicts the ancient mummy discovered in the Val Senales Glacier through a series of carefully composed fragments that recall medieval religious imagery. This work will be shown alongside a selection of Niedermair's fashion photography, for which she is internationally recognised, including through her longstanding collaboration with Dior and recent exhibitions at the New Art Museum Tanjong Pagar, Singapore (2025).
Though distinct in subject and approach, these artists share an interest in photography as constructed representation. Each intervenes in the relationship between image and subject, using composition to question how reality is recorded and perceived.
Additional works by Man Ray (1890–1976), Francesca Woodman (1958–1981) and Shirin Neshat (b. 1957) will also be on view.
