René ou Renée - Verführung is part of an early series of staged performance photographs, where Renate takes on the guise and clothing of different characters.
Here, she takes on the male and female roles (René or Renée) as she seduces and strips the androgynous mannequin. Bertlmann’s first ever artwork was in 1969, Verwandlungen, where she dressed up in different costumes and performed for the camera, using a self-timer to capture her movements: the use of performance photography has continued to dominate her practice ever since.
