Story behind: The carpet is made after a photogram entitled 7 in a Boat. The photogram was conceived in 2000 as part of Ulay’s performance 7 in a Boat at the International Art Festival Sakushima Island in Japan. Several large-sized photograms were made on photographic linen. Then Ulay built three rafts from bamboo. The photograms were attached to the rafts, like sails. The rafts were carried, each by four persons, to the seashore. Ulay undressed and swam each of the rafts out into the sea.
Attaching two images for you to get an insight into the performance (book Whispers, p. 428, 429).
(Need additional info on what happened with the photograms / the rafts after the performance and why the title '"7 in a boat". Also waiting for Ulay to replay why the carpet is "Untitled". I hope you have enough info for now.)
Making of: If I understood right the carpet was made in Nepal by the exile Tibetan people.
Jürgen: "At the moment it is still possible to produce such a soulful product with exile Tibetan in Nepal, but it might be that the government is pushing hard that this industry might be gone in near future."
