Black River, 2019, is the most recent work included in our exhibition, a work which shows a seated woman cloaked in a cheap blanket. The blanket and the cardboard layer on which she sits are a symbol of the growing problem of homelessness in SA, but Searle further expands the scene by placing golf balls and grotesque creatures on the ground (the bodies of catfish); they reference the informal economies of riverside fishing and the sale of scavenged golf balls. It’s an unsettling image that speaks volumes about the nation’s fractured economy.
