The precise dating of Law’s works, which he incorporated into their titles, highlights his longstanding interests in seriality and numerology. This is particularly apparent when the works are presented in series, such as this set of eight drawings from 1995. Each one has Law’s characteristic hand-drawn frame with signature and date at the lower right hand corner. In some later drawings this system of numbering becomes more esoteric, but here it appears to refer to the dates on which the individual drawings were produced—four days in late July and four days in early August of 1995. Drawing was a daily practice for Law, as much concerned with the passage of time as with the demarcation of space. Viewed together, these drawings point to the myriad possibilities of the rectangular field he never tired of contemplating.
