‘Expressing Breasts’ combines work that Richardson created in the 1970s along with new elements. In 2017, at the height of the ‘Me Too’ movement, Richardson came across two crocheted breasts she had made in the ‘70s and decided to add new dimensions to reflect on the abuses of male power that were occurring at the time. Upon discovery of these earlier pieces, the artist was reminded of wall plaques that homes in the ‘70s would often feature and decided to install them on the wall. Now a four-part sculpture, the entire work consists of gloved hands squeezing liquids from breasts, with drops of milk and drops of blood in reference to lactation and menstruation - the things that happen to women. A new breast was added in 2017, intentionally installed below the top three, made using a man’s glove with a black droplet oozing from the breast to reflect ‘bad’ blood. The hierarchical position of the sculptures signify power and dominance over a male aggressor beneath.
