The Birth Mask series from 2002 evolved from a series she started in 1997, the Inter-netting works. The 3-dimensional canvases act as sites of memory, allowing Nicodemus to externalise the events of the loss of and mourning for her unborn children (she and her second husband, Kristian Romare, were not able to carry a foetus to term). Using objects like exotic masks, christening robes, her daughter’s shoes, and round stuffing suggesting pregnancy, she represents rather than represents.
