Fabio Mauri (1926 – 2009) took his first steps in the art world in the early 1950s, making his debut in 1954 with a solo exhibition at the Galleria del Cavallino in Venice, where he presented his first paintings and drawings on paper. In 1957 the artist produced his first Schermo, a seminal work that would form the basis of all his subsequent artistic research. Primarily concerned with the politics of visual culture and communication, Mauri’s practice is famously multifaceted, encompassing performance, film, sculpture, installations, and mixed-media works. His interests were widely disparate, extending to publishing, film, theatre, and literature. The artist’s youth was profoundly marked by the experience of war and fascism, events that deeply shaped his artistic and intellectual legacy.
The exhibition Il Cinema per Fabio Mauri at , curated by art historian Laura Cherubini, brings together works from the 1960s to the early 2000s, including film, found-object sculpture, and installation, united by the central theme of cinema. Fabio Mauri’s work has been exhibited in major international venues such as PS1 in New York, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MOCA in Los Angeles, the Philadelphia Civic Center Museum, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and La Caixa in Barcelona. Since 1994, numerous major retrospectives have been devoted to his work, including exhibitions at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome, Kunsthalle Klagenfurt, Palazzo Reale in Milan, the Madre Museum in Naples, Museo Novecento in Florence, Castello di Rivoli in Turin and Richard Saltoun Gallery in Rome.
