From Law’s famed Black Watercolour series, this work on paper is made up of washes of colour painted over and over again, creating a dark “black” colour. Developing out of his early “Black Paintings”, the surface has a dense, rich velvet-like appearance which is off-set by the painted frame, executed in a slightly lighter layering of paint.
An auto-didactic, Law was introduced to the media of watercolour by his maternal grandmother, an artist who taught him how to apply paint and different nuances of wash in watercolour.
