Every millimetre of the canvas save a narrow, uneven border is covered with diagonal pencil marks to create a dense and grainy field that captures the repetitive movements of the artist’s hand. The border is smudged with fugitive graphite that has traveled beyond the central field and a faint grid can be seen where Law has divided the canvas into twelve sections. The scribble drawings make explicit the psychic charge Law sought in all his works, so that the entire canvas seems to vibrate with nervous energy. Drawing was fundamental to Law’s practice — from his Field Drawings of the late 1950s to the scratched lead plate of 'One Hundred Holes within One Whole' and the linear forms of his slender obelisks.Provenance
