These paintings utilised multiple coats of paint in a variety of colours including black, blue, and violet, some of which can be discerned towards the edge of the canvas. Law distinguished this “edge” from the central “field,” and in Black Diamond 14 the centre is a velvety black while the edge is a lighter, charcoal grey. Each coat of paint took two days to dry and Law would sit in a chair opposite the work, contemplating it in a meditative state. If the painting did not create the unitary field of colour he desired, Law would discard it, despite the time and labor involved in its production. Dense and jewel-like, 'Black Diamond XIV' is one of the paintings that emerged from this rigorous process.Provenance
