CAST BLACK DIAMOND, 1980Cast iron21.5 x 23.5cm'Cast Black Diamond' is an iron cast of a canvas the same size as 'Black Diamond 14,' which can be seen on the opposite wall. The pairing of these two...'Cast Black Diamond' is an iron cast of a canvas the same size as 'Black Diamond 14,' which can be seen on the opposite wall. The pairing of these two works instigates a complex set of relationships between the painted surface, the sculptural process of casting, and the wall-bound relief. In doing so, it makes us aware about how we look at Law's monochrome paintings like 'Black Diamond 14' — alternately attending to their surfaces or gazing into its inky, infinite depths. By contrast, 'Cast Black Diamond' resists the illusionistic depth of painting and insists on its presence in the three-dimensional space of the gallery. Playing with Law’s interest in alchemy, these paired works present the transmutation of a monochrome painting into the weighty metallic object hung on the opposite wall.Provenance
