'Cast Black Diamond' is an iron cast of a canvas the same size as 'Black Diamond 14,' which can be seen on the opposite wall. By contrast, 'Cast Black Diamond' resists the illusionistic depth of painting and insists on its presence in the three-dimensional space of the gallery. Playing with Law’s interest in alchemy, these paired works present the transmutation of a monochrome painting into the weighty metallic object hung on the opposite wall.
