The pile of red-stained tissues and razor blade deposited at the end of this photo sequence look horrifying. In removing her nail varnish and slicing her long, manicured fingernails off with a razorblade, the woman in this sequence is divesting herself of perfected femininity. The act is unnecessarily brutal – a suggestion of violence to the self akin to that performed by VALIE EXPORT in the 1973 work …Remote…Remote… during which the artist gouged into the skin around her nails with a Stanley knife and plunged her bleeding hands into a bowl of milk.
