Peter Kennard: Late Opening with Peter Kennard | London

13 October 2022

To coincide with the exhibition Organised KillingPeter Kennard will give a talk and sign prints of his iconic work Haywain with Cruise Missiles, at the gallery, alongside copies of his book Visual Dissent, now available to purchase at a special price of £19.99

Haywain with Cruise Missiles, originally made in 1980, is one of Kennard's most well known works and was purchased by the Tate in 2007. In this subversive photomontage, three nuclear warheads are inserted into the idyllic East Anglian countryside depicted in John Constable's famous painting The Hay Wain of 1821. The impetus for this work was the proposal to house US nuclear cruise missiles in rural East Anglia. It was also a response to a Ministry of Defence leaflet that portrayed the missiles in delicate watercolours.
