INDEPENDENT 20TH CENTURY: Manina

24 - 27 September 2026
Overview

For Independent 20th Century 2026, the gallery presents a spotlight on Austrian born, Italian artist MANINA (1918–2010).

This will be the first exhibition of Manina's work in New York since her exhibition at Hugo Gallery in 1951. With early acclaim from André Breton, who heralded her as a born Surrealist, and her later inclusion in the 1986 Venice Biennale, Manina receded from view due to personal reasons and as attention shifted away from Surrealism. This  presentation brings together key works from the 1950s–1970s. It rediscovers her as a visionary painter whose spiritual symbolism reframed Surrealism beyond Paris, and secures her place as one of the most important women Surrealist artists to come out of Italy.
