Artissima: Romany Eveleigh

For Back to the Future section at Artissima 2026, Richard Saltoun Gallery will present a spotlight on Romany Eveleigh (1934–2020), a pioneering figure of post-war abstraction who developed a distinctive, sign-based visual language within a minimalist framework.

Born in London and active in Rome from the 1960s, Eveleigh engaged deeply with the city’s avant-garde and feminist circles, transforming mark-making into a meditative and cognitive process. Her work, often executed on square canvases scaled to her body, bridges writing and painting through rhythmic, repetitive gestures. Recently rediscovered, her practice has been the subject of a major international reappraisal, including her inclusion in the 60th Venice Biennale, Foreigners Everywhere (2024), and acquisitions by leading institutions such as Tate and the Art Institute of Chicago.
