Baya

Baya. Femmes en leur Jardin is a large-format art book and scholarly catalogue, richly illustrated with drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs, and archival documents by the Algerian artist Baya (Fatma Haddad). It was published for the major retrospective organised by the Institut du Monde Arabe and the museums of Marseille, a landmark exhibition that was extended due to its great success and whose first edition of the catalogue quickly sold out — this is the reissued version. The book offers new insights into Baya’s personality, her artistic genius, and her journey as an emancipated Algerian woman and an artist of universal stature, and includes recent historical and postcolonial perspectives on her work.
