Brigitte Niedermair: Madame Hirsch

Richard Saltoun Gallery is pleased to present Brigitte Niedermair: Madame Hirsch, an exhibition dedicated to the celebrated photographic series centred on the figure of Renate Hirsch Giacomuzzi, better known as Madame Hirsch.

Working across art and fashion since the 1990s, Brigitte Niedermair has developed a photographic practice in which formal rigour and conceptual reflection converge, giving rise to images deeply rooted in the history of representation while at the same time seemingly timeless. Her work draws on the traditions of classical painting and the codes of fashion through a slow, analytical method, which the artist sums up in the phrase «make, wait and see».

Born in Merano in 1971, Niedermair established herself from the outset within the world of fashion photography, a field historically shaped by a predominantly male gaze. Today, she is recognised as one of the most important fashion photographers of her generation, also thanks to her long-standing collaboration with the Dior fashion house, for which she has produced some of her best-known images. It is within this interplay between identity, appearance and representation that Niedermair’s Madame Hirsch can be understood.

Created over the course of a year, the series follows the rhythm of Madame Hirsch’s life through celebrations, travels, social engagements, family occasions, and everyday rituals. The sequence of images retains the structure of a diary, yet Niedermair’s photography resists the logic of straightforward reportage: what is documented is a reality that is already deeply constructed, in which every gesture, every garment, and every setting contributes to the definition of the scene. Everyday life thus becomes a form of representation and the images, despite their apparent immediacy, acquire the suspended quality of a tableau vivant. It is precisely in the ambiguity between document and staging that their strength lies: everything appears real, while at the same time being carefully orchestrated.

Niedermair maintains a certain distance from her subject, incorporating into the frame the interiors, objects, flowers, furnishings, and landscapes that surround Madame Hirsch. These elements are not merely a backdrop but actively contribute to the construction of her visual identity. The house in Bolzano, with its porcelain, decorations, and abundance of objects, becomes a true theatre of memory; the recurring occasions—Christmas, Easter, winter in St. Moritz, summer in Sardinia—mark a sense of time shaped by returns and rituals.

Photography thus becomes the meeting point between two forms of authorship: that of Madame Hirsch, who throughout her life has constructed and refined her own image, and that of Brigitte Niedermair, who translates this self-representation into a photographic form capable of preserving it while simultaneously questioning it.

Through Brigitte Niedermair’s gaze, the figure of Madame Hirsch is thus removed from the fleetingness of social appearances and entrusted to the enduring nature of photography: not as a revelation of an essential self, but as a testament to the long and conscious process through which a person can construct, inhabit, and ultimately transform their own image into memory.
